The FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP 2023: The Origin of a New Generation of Female Players

Hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia has encouraged a new generation of girls to explore and enjoy this wonderful sport. In fact, we have received the highest number of inquiries from female players in the past few years compared to our 20+ years in business.

At Football First Academy, we pride ourselves on empowering women to enhance their skills. Carli Lloyd has acknowledged our director Con Boutsianis’ crucial role in her development, which is a great honour. Also, seeing some of our “little girls” representing our National Team in the Kick off game with a sold-out stadium was a heartwarming experience.

However, there are still challenges that the women’s game must overcome.

The challenges in women’s soccer

Women’s soccer has made significant strides and improvements over the years, but from our point of view, this is what’s missing. However, it is essential to continue focusing on developing shooting and crossing skills for several reasons:

  • Scoring efficiency: Improved shooting skills directly translate into more goals scored during matches. The ability to shoot accurately and powerfully allows players to capitalize on scoring opportunities and increase their team’s chances of winning.

  • Competitive balance: Soccer is becoming increasingly competitive at the international level. To remain competitive, women’s teams must continuously refine their technical abilities, including shooting and crossing. By doing so, they can match the skill level displayed by their opponents.

  • Spectator engagement: Developing impressive shooting and crossing skills can make the game more exciting for fans to watch. Spectacular goals and precise crosses create memorable moments, attracting more viewership and interest in women’s soccer.

  • Tactical flexibility: Teams with versatile players who possess strong shooting and crossing abilities have more tactical options during matches. They can use different formations and strategies to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses and adapt to various game situations.

  • Building player profiles: Developing players with well-rounded skills, including shooting and crossing, enhances their overall value and marketability. This, in turn, can attract more investment in women’s soccer, leading to better facilities, resources, and opportunities for growth.
  • National team success: Improved shooting and crossing skills are essential for national teams aiming for success in major tournaments like the FIFA Women’s World Cup or the Olympic Games. These skills become crucial in high-stakes knockout matches where goals can be hard to come by.
  • Player development: Focusing on shooting and crossing skills at the grassroots level helps identify and nurture young talent. Aspiring players can then progress through the ranks with a solid foundation, creating a pipeline of skilled players for the future.
  • Strategic advantage: A team with proficient shooting and crossing abilities can exploit their opponent’s defensive weaknesses. Delivering accurate crosses into the box and taking well-placed shots from a distance can put immense pressure on the opposing defense.
  • Individual player growth: Improving shooting and crossing skills benefits players individually. It allows them to take on leadership roles in their teams and gain recognition for their abilities, leading to opportunities to play at higher levels and in different leagues.

We believe that investment in coaching, training facilities, and overall development programs is crucial to achieving these improvements. Furthermore, promoting women’s soccer at all levels, from grassroots to professional leagues, will help cultivate a more competitive and exciting sport. As women’s soccer continues to evolve, so will the importance of developing essential skills like shooting and crossing to remain at the forefront of the global sporting landscape.

So yes, after the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 ends, we all have a lot of work to do, but we cannot wait to do our best to put the female game where it deserves!
